I think that most people don't include hospitals when they think about the typical "non-profit". Wonder how much these numbers change if you take out the health sector.

Bob,

Excellent information that is often overlooked. Government is indeed the 800 pound gorilla in the room of NP funding.

Bob,

I have been finding a great deal of interest in the nonprofit sector, to learn about, and implement a social media strategy. Particularly in light of current fiscal woes.

It seems that the idea that a nonprofit, through an on-line media property, might possess something akin to a television station, a magazine, a newspaper, or a radio station is quite the paradigm shifter for them.

It is consistently proven that a grass roots, word of mouth strategy is a powerful solution, and building on-line media properties are a great tool for accomplishing just that.

Look at what Barack Obama did in building his army of on-line evangelists! Furthermore, go look at www.whitehouse.gov. What you will find is a blog, and a very well run one at that.

It is my humble opinion that every nonprofit in the land should immediately explore such a possibility.

GREAT info, Bob...and it highlights how vulnerable revenue streams to great nonprofits will be as we roll into a new budget year. Tomorrow--on July 1st, 47 states will post defecits that, when combined, will total over $130 billion---that's three times greater than the defecits 27 states posted in 2009.

Wake-up call, indeed!!!

Nonprofits MUST become enaged in the political process, and we need to use solid economic information to make a case for our future.

Thanks for the great work you all do at Guidestar!!
